Filed under Helpful Information by on 5/16/2010

Taking on the task of building a web site can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Here are 5 steps to help make your project successful.

Select a Host

You will need a Web Host to store and deliver your website to visitors. There are a few different types of hosting plans:

(In order from least to most expensive)

  • Free hosting and web based site builders.
  • Shared
  • Virtual
  • Dedicated

You will need to research and select a host and plan that matches the size, needs of your website and your budget. If you are not sure what size plan you will need, most hosts allow you to select a smaller plan, and upgrade later if needed. Some Hosts have web based software to allow you to build your site online. Most free and discounted hosts then try to up sale you necessities needed to get your website the way you want it.

Select a Domain Name

If you are hosting with a free and/or a host that provides a web based site builder, you may not need a domain name. If they allow you the option to use a domain name, it is always a good idea. When selecting a domain name, try to select one that refers to your business name or category. Remember that domains provide branding for your site. Your web host can help you with pointing your domain to your website.

Plan Your Site

The next step is to plan your site. You will need to answer 3 questions.

  • What type of site will it be? Is it simply informational or will I need complex items like an e-commerce shopping cart?
  • What type of layout and navigation will I use? Sometimes it is helpful to surf the web for other designs that catch your eye.
  • What is my content? Time to start writing your content and gathering images.

Build and Publish Your Site

If you are using a site builder provided by your host, this step will be straight forward. But please note that site builders severely limit your design and the capabilities of your site. If not, you will need an purchase and download a HTML editor. You will be using this software on your computer to build your site page by page and then upload it to your host. Your web host can provide you with the information you need to upload your site. Also note that HTML editors limit the capabilities of your site, and that there is a learning curve to using them. If your site is complex, you may want to consider hiring a professional designer for this step.

Promote Your Website

This is the most overlooked step! You wouldn't build a new building for your business and then not provide a walkway or a door for customers to enter would you? Not advertising your web site would be the same. There are many way to promote your site:

  • Email Advertising
  • Pay Per Click Advertising (i.e. Google Adwords)
  • Banner advertising
  • Print (i.e. flyers, business cards, newspapers)
  • Word of Mouth

Please don't hesitate to call or email if you have any questions about your project.
